Profile of Indonesian Teachers' ICT Use/Competence

The first article is ‘TEACHERS’ ATTITUDES AND TECHNOLOGY USE IN
INDONESIAN EFL CLASSROOMS’
TEFLIN Journal, Volume 23, Number 2, July 2012

The results of the analysis show that, in the teachers’ opinions, various types of technology ease the teaching process, provide models of target language, arouse students’ interest in learning, and increase students’ skills for future demands. Most of the teachers use technology for practical teaching purposes and to make their instruction more successful. In addition, technology is an important tool to present models of expressions and interactions which are commonly performed by native speakers of the target language being learned. Thus, technology provides important cultural information that cannot be gained from the instruction by the classroom teacher alone. However, we need to be informed that, as Chun and Plass (2000: 165) remarked, the increasing use of web-based technology should be made relevant to principles of second language (L2) acquisition. Accordingly, before using advanced technology, teachers need to know the characteristics of their students and their learning styles. According to Chun and Plass (2000: 167), “we need to understand some basic principles of how individual learners process and retain information in different modes and how they integrate this information into the different aspects of their L2 competence.” Some students might prefer to study in face-to-face fashion than through the online use of the Internet materials. Thus, for this type of students we need to prepare them first in the classroom by giving them some preliminary activities before the students are asked to use the ICT. For example, in Cahyani’s (2011) research, she assigned her students to write accompany profile. She prepared the students to have a series of activities before the students submitted the result of final project in Facebook, one of the Internet features which is popular nowadays. The activities included specifying the company details, planning the structure or organization, writing the company brochure, writing the product and service, and writing company business strategies. After the students finished preparing these writing products, they were allowed to upload the company profile with all the pictures and the writing in the captions. Thus, technology has been used by teachers because of its practicality, convenience, and potential to create an interesting teaching and learning process. Interestingly, technology is also believed as an important tool to prepare students to face future challenges when they have finished their education.

Based on the research results and observations that have been made , the authors (Asye Rachmawaty, ST, MM) ask some perceptions that may be considered to improve the performance of teachers and students. The perceptions of these include: Increase the use of information technology and the use of media in learning, thus giving the material in the class is not boring. Improve ethics in the use of information technology; good behavior the use of technology; and the desire or consciousness to using information technology. Improve the performance of teachers, especially in terms of the amount of responsibility work done in a given period based on Legislation No. 74 Article 52 paragraph (2),the efficiency of time to work on a work, idea or ideas generated, the level of completion of the work, coherently preparing teaching materials; logical; contextual; and cutting-edge, plan effective learning activities, recovering the source teaching / learning media in accordance with the material and learning strategies, start learning effectively, designing an evaluation tool for measuring progress and success of learners, using various strategies and assessment methods for monitoring progress and learning outcomes learners in achieving certain competencies as recorded in the draft lesson. Many factors that influence or support the creation of quality learning process in order to achieve educational goals, one of which is the use or the use of technology in education and the learning process (Miarso, 2004). Learning technologies that today's applications such as process and product utilization of information and communication technologies (information and communication technology / ICT) to solve the problems of education and learning, has many benefits or advantages (Surjono D. Herman, 2010). By considering the advantages of the various forms of learning technology, it can be arranged right strategy and optimal utilization to improve the quality and the effectiveness and efficiency of learning. Utilization of information technology is a means of supporting / driving force for the organization in achieving organizational goals. Use of information technology can be done effectively if the members of the organization can use the technology properly. Effective use of technology can improve the performance. This is consistent with the technology acceptance model (technology acceptance model / TAM). Thus, the higher the individual's performance also increases the effectiveness, productivity and quality of service of the individual.

The Summary of Chapter 1 in ICT Book

Technology in the Classroom

Technology in language teaching
Technology in language teaching is not new. Indeed, technology has been around in language teaching for decades – one might argue for centuries, if we classify the blackboard as a form of technology. Tape recorders, language laboratories and video have been in use since the 1960s and 1970s, and are still used in classroom around the world.
Many people are afraid of new technology, and, with the increasing presence of the Internet and computers, the term technophobe has appeared to refer to those of us who might be wary of these new developments. More recently, the term digital native has been coined to refer to someone who grows up using technology and who thus feels comfortable and confident with it – typically today’s children. Their parents on the other hand, tend to be digital immigrants, who have come late to the world of technology, if at all. In many cases, teachers are the digital immigrants and our younger students are the digital natives.
A teacher may want to use more technology in their teaching, but the school may not have the facilities, or, on the other hand, a teacher may be instructed to start using technology for which they feel unprepared or untrained. Teachers sometimes also have some doubts to use internet to teach their students. There are several solutions to make it teachers understand and moving on to use technology inside their class. The point is the teachers should be aware that they already have certain technical skill to use technology – in this case, Internet in their classroom.
The teachers need to know more about the modern technology. In this era, technology is important to the teachers to know because nowadays the internet is getting faster in spreading. The basic skills for the teacher, in this case the basic skills of using computer should be had by the teachers for teaching their students in this modern area.
